Darwin’s preparations to host this year’s Australian Masters Athletics Championships have received a major boost with an $85,000 sponsorship from the Territory Government.
The Territory will host the national competition for the first time from 8-12 June, with more 700 athletes expected to participate.
Tourism and Culture Minister Lauren Moss said the Australian Masters Athletics Championships builds on a great 12 months for Masters’ sport in the Northern Territory.
“The Northern Territory Government is pleased to provide $85,000 of sponsorship funding to help bring this large-scale event to the Territory for the first time,” Ms Moss said.
“After the success of the 30th Anniversary Alice Springs Masters Games in 2016, it’s very evident that that there is a demand for sporting events for all ages across the country.
“I look forward to seeing the local and visiting athletes compete at the championships and enjoy all of the great dry season activities while they are here.”
Athletics NT General Manger John Bowden said the event was a great promotional opportunity for Territory sport.
“Holding national events such as the Australian Masters Athletics Championships in the Territory will attract visitors from right across the country to come to Darwin,” Mr Bowden said.
“Not only does this showcase our great facilities, it equates to more money spent in local hotels, bars, restaurants and retail shops.
“The competition will be fantastic with a very high calibre of athletes participating.”
In addition to the $85,000 sponsorship grant, Athletics NT has already received $5500 from Tourism NT for interstate marketing and promotion.
