Australian Masters Championships Come To The NT

Thursday 9th June, 2016 marks twelve months until Athletics NT will host the Australian Masters Athletics Championship in the Northern Territory for the very first time. Over 600 athletes are anticipated to converge into Darwin with the bulk of athletes coming from interstate.

Master aged athletes compete in five year age groups from 30-34, 35-39 up to 95+ years in Olympic events that include throws, jumps, sprints, distance running, walks, pole vault and multi events.

In its pursuit to attract locals, Athletics NT is offering a $10 registration to all master aged new-comers and is particularly interested in “other sports” people knowing that athletics underpins all sporting activities. This registration will allow individuals to enter all Athletic NT events throughout 2016 including the NT Championships and the World Masters Athletics Championships in Perth, through to June 2017 which includes the World Indoor Championships in Korea and finally the Darwin AMA championship.

To further attract newcomers, a ‘Come and Try’ meet will be held on Saturday 13th August 2016 in Darwin at Marrara from 5PM. In conjunction with this, masters are encouraged to sign up for athletics at the Alice Springs Masters Games in October. Training programs are available across the NT with targeted training programs currently in Alice Springs, Katherine, Palmerston, Rural and Darwin.

A number of newcomers have already signed up including ABC Sports commentator Charlie King, former Olympian Chrystal Attenborough, AFLNT CEO Michael Solomon and many AFLNT Umpires headed by Mark Noonan. Athletics NT are particularly pleased to have Charlie King on board as the Event Ambassador as our values match. Charlie has stated “it’s not about winning medals although I’m sure NT athletes will and many will strive to do that. It’s more about participation, representing the NT, wearing our colours, meeting interstaters and enjoying the journey.”

Athletics General Manager John Bowden will be working closely with the local organising committee to upgrade seating at Marrara, developing competition facilities and attracting new athletes.
